Grenelle Cemetery

The Grenelle Cemetery feels like a quiet pocket of the countryside preserved in the middle of a dense city. It was established in 1835 on a plot of land once known as Les Belles Noix, or the beautiful nuts, when the village of Grenelle first became its own independent commune. When you walk through the grounds, you are moving through a space that was carved out specifically because the growing local population needed its own place for the dead, rather than relying on the older cemetery in the neighboring village of Vaugirard.
