Vélodrome d'Hiver

The Vélodrome d’Hiver features a massive, curving glass roof that spans the track in the Grenelle neighborhood. This indoor cycling arena held six-day races and boxing matches for decades, drawing thousands of spectators to its wooden oval. In July nineteen forty-two, French police used the stadium to hold over seven thousand Jewish men, women, and children during the Vel d’Hiv Roundup. The building was demolished in nineteen fifty-nine after a fire, leaving behind a site marked today by a quiet commemorative monument.
