The Square des Martyrs Juifs du Velodrome d'Hiver features a bronze sculpture of children reaching toward the sky, set within a quiet patch of green near the banks of the Seine. This site commemorates the July nineteen forty-two roundup, when French police detained over thirteen thousand Jews and held them in the nearby Vélodrome d'Hiver sports stadium. Most were deported to Auschwitz. The stadium was demolished in nineteen fifty-nine, leaving this square as the primary physical mark of the event in this neighborhood.
