The Peniche Adelaide is a floating theater moored at the Bassin de la Villette. Originally launched in nineteen eighty-eight, this vessel served as an intimate venue for experimental performances and artist collaborations, acting as a sister ship to the better-known Peniche Opera. For decades, it functioned as a vital hub for creators who sought to bring music and theater directly to neighborhood residents who might otherwise avoid more formal, traditional institutions. During its early years, the boat was a centerpiece for a unique cultural experiment, frequently hosting intimate performances called Coups de Coeur, which gave artists a blank slate to stage whatever experimental works they envisioned. This tradition of artistic freedom solidified its reputation as an unconventional laboratory for the performing arts. Beyond its static role in the nineteenth arrondissement, the ship has regularly shed its moorings to travel along French rivers and canals, carrying touring productions to towns and regions that do not have their own permanent playhouses. The vessel houses a specialized auditorium with tiered seating for eighty people, designed around a small stage and piano. While the management and artistic collectives onboard have changed over the years, the boat remains a working piece of maritime infrastructure dedicated to the arts. It stands as a physical reminder of a movement that viewed the network of French waterways not just as a means for industrial transport, but as a path for decentralized culture.
