The low, unassuming red door on Rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle belongs to Chez Moune. It started in the nineteen twenties as the first lesbian cabaret in Paris. A woman named Moune owned the space, and she greeted guests by name while musicians played jazz through the smoke. She insisted on a welcoming atmosphere for women who had few other places to go. The club stayed open through decades of social change, evolving from an intimate jazz cellar into a late-night music venue.
