The Stade Bauer wears its age in rusted iron and mismatched concrete stands that crowd right up against the surrounding apartment buildings. Home to Red Star Football Club since nineteen twenty-nine, the stadium survived by refusing to modernize into a generic arena. In the nineteen eighties, the club legend Rino Della Negra, a resistance fighter executed by the Nazis, became a rallying figure for the fans. His name remains painted on the walls, honoring a player who died for his city.
