Porte de Clignancourt de Paris

The Porte de Clignancourt is marked by the wide, open junction where the Boulevard Ornano meets the Boulevard Ney, standing as one of the original gates in the Thiers wall that once ringed Paris. In the nineteenth century, this was a customs barrier where merchants paid taxes on goods entering the city. During the construction of the metro extension in nineteen oh eight, engineers buried the old wall, leaving behind this bustling transit hub where thousands pass daily without noticing the vanished fortifications.
