Montmartre aux artistes

The Montmartre aux artistes building features a vast glass facade that lets light flood into seventy-two individual studios. Completed in nineteen thirty-two, this complex was designed specifically for painters and sculptors who could not afford the soaring rents of the neighborhood. The architect, Adolphe Thiers, prioritized high ceilings and north-facing windows for consistent natural illumination. Its residents included the sculptor Auguste Herbin, who worked within these walls while struggling to maintain his creative output during the occupation of the second world war.
