Maison du Peuple de Clichy

The Maison du Peuple in Clichy is recognizable by its glass and steel curtain wall, which wraps the structure in a transparent skin that was revolutionary for nineteen thirty-nine. Architects Eugene Beaudouin and Marcel Lods designed this building as a multipurpose social center for the working class. It functioned as a market hall by day and a theater by night, thanks to moveable floors and partition walls. When the machinery jammed during the opening gala, the actors had to finish the performance in the dark.
