Batignolles Cemetery

The high, vine-covered limestone walls of the Batignolles Cemetery hide the final resting place of over fifteen thousand people behind a narrow iron gate on the Rue Saint-Just. Opened in eighteen thirty-three to serve the growing village of Batignolles, it holds the grave of André Breton, the founder of surrealism, whose tombstone is usually covered in small trinkets and pens left by admirers. The city buried the poet Paul Verlaine here as well, moving his remains to this quiet corner of the seventeenth arrondissement.
