Monument to Maréchal Moncey

The bronze statue of Marshal Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey stands atop a high pedestal at the center of the Place de Clichy. He holds his sword pointing downward, facing the spot where he commanded a desperate defense against Allied forces in eighteen fourteen. During the Battle of Paris, Moncey organized a makeshift militia of National Guardsmen and students to hold the tollgate against thousands of Russian troops. He managed to delay the capture of the city for one full day before finally surrendering.
