Place de l’Horloge

The Place de l’Horloge is defined by the massive, wrought-iron clock tower that rises from the Hôtel de Ville, its face perpetually keeping time for the city. While the square serves as the modern social heart of Avignon, it started as the Roman forum. In the nineteenth century, the city council decided to level the old medieval structures to create this expansive open space. They left the clock tower standing, anchored to the new town hall, to preserve the city's medieval rhythm.
