Rue de la Grande Fusterie

Rue de la Grande Fusterie holds a single, dark distinction in the heart of Avignon. In the middle of the fourteenth century, the street served as the primary residence for the city's guild of carpenters and woodworkers. Their heavy trade gave the street its name, derived from the old word for timber. When the Black Death arrived in thirteen forty-eight, the narrow, timber-framed houses trapped the contagion. Municipal records from that summer show the street was walled off to prevent anyone from leaving.
