The Bridge of Avignon

The Pont Saint-Benezet reaches only halfway across the Rhone River, ending abruptly in the middle of the current. According to legend, a young shepherd named Benezet arrived in twelve seventeen claiming a divine vision to build a bridge here. He allegedly moved a massive stone block that ten men could not budge, convincing the local bishop of his mission. The river currents eventually destroyed most of the stone arches, leaving the remaining four sections isolated against the backdrop of the city walls.
