The Rue de la Balance carries a name that points back to the Middle Ages. It refers to the public scales, or the balance, that once stood here to weigh goods brought into the city. Merchants arriving through the nearby gate had to pay their taxes based on those official weights. It served as a checkpoint where the flow of trade met the authority of the Avignon popes. Today, the street remains a quiet, narrow passage defined by high stone walls and centuries of heavy use.
