Rue Saint-Agricol

The Rue Saint-Agricol is defined by a narrow, medieval curve that suddenly widens near the church bearing the same name. While much of Avignon feels like a grand stage for the popes, this street retains the tight, irregular footprint of the thirteenth century. It takes its name from a bishop who reportedly saved the city from a disastrous flood of the Rhone by casting his staff into the waters. The street still follows the path it carved long before the papacy arrived.
