Rue de la Bonneterie is a narrow, winding street distinguished by the carved stone lintels that top many of its doorways. In the fourteenth century, this corridor served as the center of the local hosiery and bonnet-making trade, where artisans operated workshops on the ground floors and lived in the stories above. One workshop owner, a weaver named Pierre de Lunel, once famously refused a tax levy from the papal court, claiming his looms were already mortgaged to the city’s grain merchants.
