3 Domes Viewpoint

landmark

Three bright blue domes sit atop the Church of Anastasis in Oia, contrasting sharply against the white plaster of the surrounding buildings and the deep Aegean Sea. These domes define the classic postcard image of Santorini. They were constructed in the nineteenth century, when wealthy ship owners in Oia funded elaborate churches to compete for prestige. During the nineteen fifty-six earthquake, the village suffered immense damage, and residents spent years carefully restoring these domes by hand to preserve the original Aegean architectural style.
