Castle of Oia

historic

The Castle of Oia sits on a jagged cliff edge, marked by a single remaining watchtower and a series of fragmented stone walls that frame the caldera. Built during the fifteenth century by the Argyros family to oversee maritime traffic, this fortification served as a defensive shield against persistent pirate raids. When a massive earthquake struck in nineteen fifty-six, the structure crumbled into the ruins visible today. People now crowd these weathered stones every evening, waiting for the sun to drop below the horizon.
