The church of Saint Anastasis distinguishes itself with a deep cobalt dome that sits against the white masonry of Oia. While Santorini is famous for these blue-capped structures, this particular church was built in eighteen eighty-six to serve the growing maritime community of the village. Captains and sailors funded its construction, commissioning local craftsmen to carve the intricate bell towers. They placed their offering here to seek protection from the Aegean, hoping the structure would endure the island's frequent and violent earthquakes.
