Ammoudi Bay

Ammoudi Bay sits at the bottom of the deep caldera cliffs, marked by a fringe of red volcanic rock and a row of low, whitewashed buildings pressed against the water. For decades, this was the primary port for Oia, where donkeys hauled heavy crates of wine and volcanic pumice up the steep zig-zagging path to the town above. Captain Antonis Dakoronias once maintained a shipyard here, building wooden boats that navigated the Aegean long before tourists arrived by the thousands every summer.
