Oia Steps

Two hundred and seventy-eight stone steps zigzag down the sheer volcanic cliff of Oia, connecting the village perched at the top to the small harbor of Ammoudi below. Before the road arrived in the nineteen eighties, these steps carried every bit of cargo required by the village. Donkeys hauled crates of fish, barrels of wine, and building materials up the steep incline. Sailors hauled their own goods by hand, sweating under the relentless Aegean sun to reach their homes above.
