Skólavörðustígur Rainbow Street

The asphalt of Skólavörðustígur displays a permanent, vibrant rainbow painted directly onto the street surface, leading the eye uphill toward the towering Hallgrímskirkja church. Originally created for Reykjavík Pride in twenty nineteen, the city decided to keep the design as a permanent fixture. It serves as a public declaration of support for the LGBTQ plus community. During the winter months, the painted surface is heated by geothermal water pumped beneath the street, which keeps the rainbow clear of snow and ice.
