The Karbala in Jor Bagh features a sunken courtyard surrounded by low, whitewashed walls that keep the site hidden from the street level. This burial ground serves the Shia community of Delhi during the mourning month of Muharram. In the middle of the enclosure sits a symbolic replica of the tomb of Imam Husayn. When processions arrive here, people carry replicas of the martyr’s shrine, called tazias, to be interred in the earth, marking the end of their long, rhythmic march through the city.
