Lodhi Colony Market

The Lodhi Colony Market features a series of identical, low-slung, cream-colored concrete blocks arranged in a grid. Built in the nineteen forties for government employees, the area represents the final phase of British colonial urban planning in Delhi. Architects designed these spaces with thick walls and high ceilings to trap coolness during blistering summers. Before the market filled with boutique shops and cafes, residents simply swapped produce and household goods in the open courtyards between these identical, functional rows of staff housing.
