Safdarjung Tomb

The Safdarjung Tomb stands apart because of its heavy, bulbous dome and the charcoal-streaked sandstone that forms its facade. This sandstone mausoleum was built in seventeen fifty-four for the man who served as the Grand Vizier to the Mughal Emperor. When the Vizier died, his son constructed this tomb to house his father’s remains. It became the final monumental garden tomb built in the Mughal style, marking the architectural end of an era before the power of the empire fractured.
