Das Gupta & Company Private Limited

The shopfront of Das Gupta and Company features rows of tall, dark wooden shelves packed tightly with aging, dust-covered books. Founded in nineteen thirty-six by Jatindramohan Dasgupta, this shop grew out of a small store that served the students and professors of the nearby university. During the nineteen forties, the store became a gathering place for activists and intellectuals who traded banned pamphlets and political tracts. Today, the floor space remains crowded with stacks of literature that reach toward the ceiling.
