The Sanskrit College and University (State University)

The Sanskrit College and University displays a long, stately neoclassical façade featuring a rhythmic row of tall, arched windows and columns painted a deep, weathered ochre. Established in eighteen twenty-four by the British East India Company, the school served as a center for teaching ancient texts to both European scholars and local students. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, a giant of Bengali education and social reform, served as its principal, where he famously fought to open its doors to students beyond the traditional Brahmin caste.
