The brick red facade of the main building at Calcutta Medical College anchors this site, its tall arched windows and wide verandas defining the view across the square. Established in eighteen thirty-five, this institution occupies the spot where the British colonial government decided to train Indian students in Western medicine. Before this, the site held a mix of traditional homes and small shops. A student named Madhusudan Gupta famously braved social taboos here, becoming the first person to dissect a human body.
