The General Post Office in Kolkata is marked by its soaring white dome and a majestic row of towering Corinthian columns. Walter Granville designed this massive structure in the eighteen sixties to replace an earlier, smaller office that stood on the same ground. When the foundations were dug, workers unearthed the original walls of the old Fort William, which had been destroyed after the siege of seventeen fifty-six. The post office was built directly over the ruins of that forgotten battle site.
