Nahoum and Sons features a dark, polished teak wood storefront with a display case filled with rich fruitcakes, lemon tarts, and dense fudge brownies. Nahum Israel Mordecai, a Jewish immigrant from Baghdad, opened this shop in nineteen oh two to serve the growing colonial population. It remains the oldest Jewish-owned bakery in Kolkata. Even as the city changed and the original Jewish community dwindled, the shop kept its original recipes, keeping its steady stream of customers for over a century.
