The Asiatic Society holds a massive, fluted stone column sitting right at its entrance, a feature that distinguishes it from the crowded streetscape of Park Street. Founded in seventeen eighty-four by Sir William Jones, the institution began as a hub for scholars to research the languages and history of Asia. When Jones translated the Sanskrit classic Shakuntala, he triggered a global interest in Indian literature. Today, its library guards ancient palm-leaf manuscripts and rare Sanskrit texts that changed how the world understood Indian antiquity.
