Calcutta Town Hall

landmark

The Calcutta Town Hall features a high, sweeping staircase leading to a grand portico supported by massive Doric columns. Built in eighteen thirteen, the building served as a gathering space for the city’s European elite. In eighteen ninety-two, the local government held a dinner here for the visiting Cesarewitch of Russia, the future Tsar Nicholas the Second. Guests consumed thousands of oysters and bottles of champagne, while the hall's heavy wooden floors shook under the weight of hundreds of dancing couples.
