The Raj Bhavan features a massive white colonnade and a central dome that dominates the surrounding grounds. Built in eighteen hundred and three for the Marquess Wellesley, the then Governor-General of India, this palace was designed to reflect the power of the British East India Company. Wellesley famously spent so much money on its construction that the company board in London recalled him to England. He left behind a structure modeled after his own family home, Kedleston Hall, with sprawling wings.
