St. John's Church

The tall, white spire of St. John’s Church rises above the intersection, topped by a prominent golden weathercock. Built in seventeen eighty-seven on the site of an old graveyard, this was the first cathedral of the city. When the East India Company decided to build it, they used stones salvaged from the demolished ruins of the ancient Gour city. Inside the grounds stands a heavy, octagonal mausoleum containing the remains of Job Charnock, who is traditionally credited as the founder of Calcutta.
