Mocambo Restaurant and Bar

The Mocambo Restaurant and Bar features a distinctive, glowing neon sign and a heavy glass door that swings into a polished, wood-paneled interior. Opened in nineteen fifty-six by Shivji Vithal Purav, a former waiter who worked his way up from the ranks of Calcutta’s elite dining scene, it brought Continental cuisine to a city hungry for a change from local spice. Musicians often played live jazz in the corner, and the menu cards became as famous as the deviled crab.
