The Dormition Abbey features a massive, conical roof topped with a golden mosaic of the Virgin Mary, visible from nearly every high point in the city. According to church tradition, this site marks where Mary fell into eternal sleep. Kaiser Wilhelm the Second secured the land from Sultan Abdul Hamid the Second in eighteen ninety-eight, intending to solidify German influence in Jerusalem. Construction finished in nineteen ten, resulting in a fortress-like stone structure that stands as the official residence of the Benedictine monks.
