Lutheran Church of the Redeemer

The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer features a tall, square bell tower that looms over the dense stone rooftops of the Christian Quarter. Kaiser Wilhelm the Second arrived here in eighteen ninety-eight to dedicate the building, riding into the city on a white horse through a breach specially opened in the old walls. He wanted to cement German influence in the Holy Land. Stone masons from Germany carved the intricate Romanesque arches, creating a deliberate contrast to the Byzantine and Crusader architecture nearby.
