The Christ Church building features a distinct, fortress-like stone exterior with a simple, unadorned bell tower that rises above the surrounding rooflines of the Armenian Quarter. Established in eighteen forty-nine by the London Society for Promoting Christianity Amongst the Jews, it holds the distinction of being the first Protestant church constructed in the Middle East. During its initial construction, the local Ottoman authorities halted work, fearing the tower might serve as a military fortification rather than a house of worship.
