Zion Gate

The Zion Gate is defined by the pockmarks covering its heavy iron-clad doors and the surrounding stone. These indentations are the remnants of intense fighting during the nineteen forty-eight Arab-Israeli War, when Israeli forces attempted to break through into the Old City. The gate served as a vital point of conflict, leaving the masonry scarred by bullets and shrapnel. Today, the gate remains a primary entrance for travelers heading toward the Jewish and Armenian quarters, still bearing the violent physical history of that siege.
