בית כנסת החורבה - Hurva Synagogue

The Hurva Synagogue features a massive, arched stone dome that dominates the skyline of the Jewish Quarter. In seventeen hundred, a group of Ashkenazi settlers arrived here and began construction on a site they bought, but the project collapsed into debt after their leader died. Creditors burned the half-finished structure to the ground, leaving it a ruin known as the Hurva, or the Ruin. For over a century, the site remained an empty lot until the community finally rebuilt it in eighteen fifty-six.
