Batei Ungarin

Batei Ungarin features a cluster of low stone houses wrapped around a narrow, rectangular courtyard. Built in the late nineteenth century, the neighborhood provided housing for impoverished Jewish immigrants from Hungary. The founders created a communal trust to ensure the homes remained affordable for families who had nowhere else to go. Residents still pay a nominal, fixed rent, a tradition maintained through the original bylaws. A small plaque near the entrance lists the names of the families who first settled here.
