Ades Synagogue

The Ades Synagogue stands out with its thick, stone walls and a roofline that barely hints at the elaborate, gold-leafed interior hidden inside. Built in nineteen hundred and one by Syrian Jewish immigrants, the synagogue became the center for the Aleppo community in Jerusalem. Yosef Ades, a wealthy merchant, funded the construction to house the unique liturgical traditions of his people. During the nineteen thirties, the synagogue faced severe financial struggles, forcing congregants to sell off some of their treasured, ornate silver ritual objects.
