Mahane Yehuda Street

The Mahane Yehuda Market spans the area between Jaffa Road and Agrippas Street, anchored by heavy, corrugated iron stalls that rattle with activity from before dawn. In the late nineteenth century, this site was an open, rocky hillside outside the city walls. Farmers from surrounding villages gathered here to trade produce with residents of the new neighborhoods. By the nineteen twenties, the chaotic sprawl of makeshift crates and carts forced the British Mandate authorities to organize the space into the permanent grid seen today.
