Even Israel is identifiable by its narrow, limestone-walled alleyways that open suddenly into quiet, shadowed courtyards. Built in eighteen sixty-five, it was the second neighborhood established outside the walls of the Old City. Rivka Salomon, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, funded the construction specifically to provide affordable housing for the city's growing impoverished population. Families lived in cramped, single-room units, sharing outdoor ovens and cisterns, turning the inner square into the primary room for their daily lives.
