Cardo

The Cardo is a wide, open-air walkway lined with towering stone columns and reconstructed arches that sit several feet below the modern street level. Originally built by the Romans in the second century, this was the primary north to south commercial artery of Aelia Capitolina, the city that replaced Jerusalem after its destruction. Merchants once displayed their wares under these stone colonnades while citizens walked the limestone pavement between shops. You can see the original foundation stones still embedded in the deep earth.
