Saint saviour monastry

The Saint Saviour Monastery in the Christian Quarter is identifiable by its heavy, fortress-like stone walls and the prominent clock tower rising above the roofline. Built by the Franciscan Order in the nineteenth century, it serves as the administrative hub for the Custody of the Holy Land. During the eighteen eighties, the monks negotiated a deal with the Ottoman authorities to add a third floor, providing they removed the original bell tower, which had been criticized for rising higher than the nearby neighborhood mosques.
