Valero Square sits at the intersection of Agrippas and Kiach streets, marked by a stone fountain that remains dry most of the year. It bears the name of the Valero family, Sephardic Jewish financiers who arrived in Jerusalem in the mid-nineteenth century. Jacob Valero founded the first private bank in the city, providing loans to neighbors and settlers when Ottoman credit systems failed. The square stands where the family estate once provided a hub for the city’s early modern commercial life.
