The blue wooden sign hanging outside Vintage Kanenaga marks a former residential house transformed into a clothing store. Nakazakicho retains many of these narrow, two-story structures from the early twentieth century, spared from firebombing during the war. Inside, clothes from the nineteen fifties to the nineties fill every available space, floor to ceiling. The shopkeeper fills the shelves by scouring auctions and estate sales across the country, specifically hunting for denim and workwear that have already survived a lifetime of wear.
