A sprawling green lawn stretches out directly in front of the glass-walled station buildings in Ofukacho. This is Umekita Park, the heart of a massive urban redevelopment project built on the site of a former freight railway yard. While the rest of Osaka fills with concrete towers, this space keeps a wide open sky. In the middle of the grass, a man once stood with a shovel to mark the start of an ambitious plan to turn industrial wasteland into a public backyard.
